If You Play With Snake Be Prepared For Trouble

As a general rule I believe animals can only be true to their nature. The human being is no exception, Sometimes you got to call a snake a snake. It isn’t a worm it isn’t and ant … It’s a snake. In a recent conversation another female business owner asked me to be patient with a another individual in our business circles. True we each have our faults but sometimes a snake is a snake…

From our Brooklyn Fashion Presentation in 2005 Michi Designer knitwear,

It’s time designers know each other! I am mre than a bit disturbed by the concept of network! Somewhere between a closed secret society and an event that can only be described in terms of Deep sea trawler fishing. where the net is thrown out and what ever is dragged in is considered a ‘catch!

Each year Africa American Celebrate Kwanzaa, with it’s princeiples that extol community.  Christian speak of brotherhood!  Yet as a practice that concept is not practiced.

I have head many reason for it from fear to post trumatic slavery. many believe that lack fuels the greed and self centeredness that accompanies it. Oh I forgot It is not a subject we speak about outside the family.

However unless it is dealt with the issues will persist. Today I sent out my designers list, simply under a cc not a blind copy. It’s a business list not a top secret government list. These emails are part of the business collateral cards etc that local designers use.  So yes it’s a public list. I figured businesses should know each other!

The second aspect is that I will be scraping that list as well as my email list as of next week? I’m not crazy. If designers and others want the information they simply have to opt in to the mailing list.

Ive done it before and it works.  If what I send is important if not one less email to clutter a box.

So there is a subscription box on the right column of this site!

Why Do You Want To Do a Brooklyn Fashion Week Show

“WHY DO YOU WANT TO DO A FASHION WEEK SHOW?”

I’m starting to ask  designers that. The truth is they believe it’s what they should do… at the end of the runway when it’s time to sit and talk business they are  not prepared.

We’re a habitual bunch we keep doing the same things repeatedly even if it isn’t working. Yes we run www.BrooklynFashionweek.com but we do not do “FASHION WEEK”  Now a week where designers organize and create a designer to consumer show and shopping celebration….  That makes Cents. Hey I like a great show just like the next female. And for those begging me to do a show I’m considering September ( for my Birthday) or as part of  www.BrooklynFashionweek.com  The First as an artist, the latter, if I decide to produce a line for sale!

[singlepic id=32 w=515 h= float=]

“Fashion Week” has become the “thing” to do, even government officials are getting into the deal. And it is a deal, promoters make serious cash with sponsorships and media rights. One NY designer has returned to her showroom show. Her  Seventh on siXth shows reported to have cost as much as $700,000  which is an investment if we’re speaking lucrative licensing deals!

Yet every single “person” is doing one without a clear strategy other than it’s what they see on TV.  What?

There is no coy way to ask this but most designers walking those runways are not selling… in fact many are broke!

Designers that are gaining accounts have buyers or showrooms.  Well first of all they have a well laid out business plan. they can hand a buyer a shopping list or menu of what they offer. often they can send one out to the buyers oon their list. As one boutique owner puts it I run a business I don’t hav time to play around and party.  So designers where are you LINE SHEETS or catalog?

They have product that is well made, their production and financing is secured even before they go to market.  So that they are ready to go (into production) once those orders are received. They have funding to cover the 30-90 days  they won’t get paid. They’ve organized shipping so their product won’t get “held up” If you are putting out $4000.00 shouldn’t yes fashion weeks cost  to fet the marketing and  Buyers their. Foor venues that are convenient to Buyer’s jobs’ A buyer is not going to show up after hrs unless it is worth their while!

[singlepic id=33 w=515 h= float=right]

I am not talking about “Fashionista” or e-commerce sites that want drop shipping deals After hours with sorority sisters is not  a “Fashion Week!” It’s a party (and a damn good one at that!) “Sista’s” excuse me, but would you like to make your presentation that will secure that house you’ve been dreaming off in front of hooting hollering frat boys! Show a little respect!

Designers who sell have their labels, EDI codes and vendor number, or their own stores, if needed; they have line-sheets product shots and other sales collateral. The designers I know with millions  in sales may not don’t even have ads or editorial.

More importantly they know their customers’ measurements and their patterns have been developed to FIT

Many promoters give free participation and pay designers (essentially using them as bait) to draws attention hungry designers to their folds. We support young designers showing to improve their presentation skills, but they are not interested in the business of design.

So what is Brooklyn fashion week essential the latter format! And yes we’ve gotten designers in front of buyers that why we understand where the issues lie. Fashion is serious business, We’ve worked designers through trade show’s and press placement, Finally folks do not plan walking down that runway,  with a “Prince Charming” on a white horse riding in to “back” you.

We’ve been on hold exploring a second vital component that will take the designer’s ( or rather his sales rep straight to the buyer’)

Whether or not we do a “Designer organized, Brooklyn  Fashion Week will essentially depend of if designers are ready…. and guys you know what I mean by that. Crocked seems are not a fashion statement. All the press in the world won’t save a poor quality business! If you’re doing knit swimwear that stretches when wet a buyer won’t pick you up! And even if every thing else is in line and you can’t show the money …you’re dropped!

If Teh items and business points are not familiar to you contact us we have a creative entrepreneurs workshop starting soon!

Feel free to comment but as I see it A designer should be a leader not a follower!

Work Smart Not Hard Is The Goal

We need to address our subscribers and ask that they bear with us! As we stream line our processes we are taking a serious look at functionality. DeMarketplace is a Virtual Incubator, and as such not just an exploration of new media implementation, but a teach tool.  This particular segment “As I see IT ‘ is not just “blog” in the sense that it catalogs the tools we use, but process of implementation and adjustments.

We serve several roles as well as individuals. The challenge is collecting essentially a data management issue, which should be simple if we were running a library or stock room. That data need to be analyzed, but in perspective, and distributed to sereval divers groups.

To compound the problem there are intellectual property and privacy concerns.  For the most part we find it easier to crete our own images supporting media… till we found ourselves having to track the abuse of our ip rights( re-posting  of original material as your own is not  “original- content”.  We’re still divided on key digital rights management issues. While we strongly believe in the notion that some knowledge needs to be within the public Developing strong content is costly, whet or not i want to admit it , managing my digital asset is becoming an issue.I am actually looking for an automatic digital signature withauthorin software. something I do not hav eto remember to do or register. Simply Automated.

With all that the biggest challenge in managing the routes, or pipelines that information travel is understanding the very tools  we use to get them there. every developer seeems to want to do everything, yet never does it well enough so that his is th eonly tool you need! “Mashup” are simply an indication of lack of proper design! Ok now sue me. .. I have tried well over  thousand apps, and I am convinced developers never actually try them out themselves in the given scenarios.

The choice is publish or it dies, so we’re back again testing the auto features.  Please excuse multiple post or post made too early, while we work out he kinks

In case you’re wondering  we’ve made two significant changes; first we’ve added autopposting finctionality and second we’ve changed that segment title from “Daily Digest to While you were on Facebook. Every day i’m fielding calls about not ‘responding” on to messages on facebook. first of all if I need to respond to you use my skype or gtalk. if it needs to be a public discussion on one of the sevral private grous online. if you are sending me info to pass along the truth is that forwarding the great news of 100  businesses, is time consuming.

You see while you’s on Face book , I;m taking care of my and my communities business. I’m scoring tons of websites researching the latest news. I’m designing and testing ways to use these new tools in business, and also have to find the time to document and post, Did I mention edit. I’m a terrible typist, who thinks way faster than she types,  so editing takes a ton of time.

I Don’t Sell BS- Personal vs Personna Branding

As I see it …  I don’t believe in selling you BS, so  do ask me to help you engage in marketing  your “personal brand!”
With huge amounts of money being put into services that help businesses suddenly everyone is an expert!  I have sat in on so many ‘discussions lately on what is personal branding and selling; the “Personal Brand”: and “Personal branding and Social Network Marketing’.  If you disagree name me one person who is “selling a personal brand”

My initials are ‘BS’ (Bonnie Sandy), and I have no problem using them when appropriate to stress just how ridiculous something is. A “brand” is a public set of definitions, which lay out guidelines on areas that influence how people perceive you. Anyone who knows me within my project will tell you that

I don’t take shortcuts,
I am always smiling
I never get angry
I am well versed on topics on which, I speak
I am well organized
I am a team player
I won’t stand for unethical practices
I am open
I am bold

Anyone who knows me on a personal level will tell you that

My motto is the shortest distance between two points is a straight line. I have a fiery temper and a vengeful spirit – I don’t get mad I get even. I use my words and truth to do so…. I won’t let you get away with BS.  I am Brutally honestI am stubborn
I can’t stand unethical behavior
I am extremely loyal
I am private
I am shy

No I am not a mental case; I simply understand the difference between personal and persona. I understand where Bonnie ends and the project begins. I don’t sell BS under  any circumstances.  Yes often I have to  stepped out of my “personal”  to accomplish the goals of  the project

Who I am where I like to hang, what I like to do, how I like look to dress are influence by the personal, emotional and creative and spiritual “space” I am in. They may change depending on the side of the bed, the weather, or how much sleep  I’ve had. Yes my personal ethics and morals are consistent and may shape my decisions, but ultimately I am responsible to myself.

On the other hand with the project I run and subsequently business that someone runs, there are expressed commitments, to others. Consistency is vital. Who (more accurately what) that business is,  where it can be found, what “it ” does and how “it” looks is part of that commitment. While not a “person” that entity has it’s own identity, a personae. Staying true to that personae and that commitment is vital to its success.

My argument iis that we sell personae, carefully package to be eperceiived in a particular light.  If you’re thinking of celebrities … these are the most carefully packaged “personae’ that exists today.  What causes  PR  headache is that these are so often so far removed from who they really are that they inevitable  get caught out of ‘character”.

When I get up in the morning short tempered and ill-mannered I just warn my son .. I’m not in the mood today. If say “Facebook” decided to be ‘exclusively a portal for businesses, first of all t hat has a process to go through before a final decision is made and even then existing clients, legal, and advertisers have to be notified. Even if an individual blogger changes his mind on his site policy or layout it is good business to notify his readers and on the pending changes in his sites personae. FaceBook’s Brand personae how we perceive it and more importantly what we expect from it and how we behave and engage with other within its confines differ from others in it sector. It has a strong Brand personae..

Even then given the standards I have chosen for the overall public perception of my “Brand”. I treat each “sites on it’s own merit. Each individual installation has a different mission, a different set of goals and objectives and even a different reader…  in short a different personae

To simply fly  what  defines a brand I ask  the artist in my project (overwhelmingly  family oriented, to think of each of their individual children then.

  1. What are they wearing right now
  2. Where will they shop?
  3. Who is their friend”?
  4. What set s them apart from their friends
  5. Where will you most likely find them?
  6. What, books, magazine, music will they own, borrow give away?

In their children this is personality. Packaging these elements together to define a product creates brand personae.

In The Works- Topics we plan to cover later- if you have a request post it in the comments!

  • What is  “IT”
  • What do you expect a “Blog” to do for you
  • How to decide on the what tools you need
  • Defining you vision, mission, goals and objectives.
  • What do you do…What do you sell
  • What’s your business’s  persona
  • Personae,  Style and communiication

Products Should Serve The Needs of Your Consumers

As I see IT Products should serve the needs of your consumer base. We developed our initial offerings offline in response to artist and consumer needs! Now we’re taking it online we are also developing a complete new site redesign that would better suit the needs of those we serve!

[singlepic id=14 w=515 h=200 mode=web20 float=]

‘He, we need to find a better way to sell… travel and show cost are getting way too expensive, and there are so many vendors that this makes no sense, Can’t you develop a virtual trade show using that tech stuff!’

At Demarketplace our primary consumer are designers artist and crafters; and by extension, we help them access wholesalers, retailers and consumers. Micro Entrepreneurs have limited resources to compete. We choose to specialize in master artist and craftsmen, many are digital aliens they have expressed a need to understand new technology especially as it applies to marketing. In order to better serve them we keep abreast of the latest applications and emerging technology in all aspects from product development to distribution.

During the exploration phase, it never failed to surprise me how few business owners, cannot identify their consumers or constituents or for that matter can ‘say’ how their products serves the needs of that consumer. Far too often we find Business owners focused on ‘I’. I want to do this, I want to do that,

What does the customer want or need from you? Who is your customer?

This is why you need to Back up your info

OK I should know better, always back up your info, in my case it should be daily, but lately things have been so hectic that I have not been able to upload and back up and as I suspected my laptop Crashed. I use the poor instrument 15-20hrs a day and it works! So I am not surprised when this Friday night after a late session with a designer it crashed.

Fortunately I have most of the articles and images I had been preparing online so it just means that I have to pull them down and re-edit! Again my OLPC has come through, The keys are a bit small and please excuse the typos but this little machine can..

Unfortunately it’s the week end press started appearing on our project

In The meantime I suggest checking out some of the articles we have previaously posted!

Yea We Got Press

When It Rains…

I have to express a thank you to The Daily News courtesy Jared McCallister I havebeen getting call about the mention in his. Sunday Column.. More Importantly Fabien Burrel of Aziza Pr who has come aboard as part of our community efforts. We tend to get bogged down  in ‘ just doin” so It’s really helps to have someone take on the challenge of working within our budget and do so effectively.

Speaking of which we alsodid a live interview with Richie Richardson which we will link to shortly thanks!

Chippin Support Local Designers & Artist

open source video, online video platform, video streaming, video solutions

We’ve set up a chippin so that we can raise funds needed to help local desifgners and artist market.

At the end of the runway we sell.

A simple statement that defines what sets our program apart. All Artist and Designers participating in projects are financially responsible for there costs incurred, as well as actively participate in marketing. For the past four years, we have offered support in the form of free training and workshops. we have explored the applications of many theories in the “real” world.

This season we are exploring crowd sourcing and crowdfunding and their suitability and adaptability as business models within communities.

Each artist has committed to improving and expanding their product range and price structure. They also each commit to passing on the knowledge through workshops, seminars and taking on apprentices.

Schedule Update SS2009 Season

Space_Program.png

To say we are Swamped is an understatement! There is however something to be said for collaborative action, In the next two weeks we will be updating all our  web properties in preparation for the SS09 Season!

This time however we are pulling all the components together in support of local creatives. Workshops and seminars, websites and blogs, social media and communities, affiliation and affiliates, 2d code and Mobile Payments. Sms, twitter, cirpin, viod reviews and live streaming!

We have always boldly faced change, the question now becomes can we extend our concept outside the secure confines of our  network. In the last few days I average to two to three call a day asking for help a connection,  a solution!

We have proven that businesses can  be revived, succeed and even thrive despite difficult conditions! There are challenges, one of them financing and funding. As the entrepreneurial landscape becomes more constraining, access becomes an issue. Past experience, leads many to expect that those funds will not reach those that can best utilize these resources, Existing  organization will resort to their culture of nepotism and narrow minded approach to solutions dictated by  board and managers without any practical business experence!

Now more than everes these  business need marketing… Effective marketing even with creative thinging and collaboration is costly. We have photograres, videograhers stylist and creative directors who are willing to offer extreely competitive rates, the Street Mpartners is practically sponsoring the campaign. We have web and Pr support. yet an effective campaign which will maximize these opportunities of the summer months will cost. So we have set up a chipping To help offset the cost!

Open Style We’re hitting the road this summer

Giselle8.jpgAs I See It, we have only just began to explore technology’s potential to shape the next generation of businesses! We have been hard at work redesigning our online project and web pages inline with our project’s finding with, QR codes, live and Mobile Streaming, and extending events as well as exploring social media, and other new media tools such as twitter.

Keep in mind that the businesses who volunteer are Hyper-local, grass roots, and can be best described as digital aliens. They are howevr experts at showing and selling and their product are high quality and creative. Whenever possible they employ local talent and production.

You can sample a preview of Gizelle- A new line by “Natacha Jospitre” as well as our test of audio and video on the homepage of our main site. www.Demarketplace.com. We are moving our workshops and exploring online sales venues.

We do not accept “theories” on marketing and social media but rather put each through a live practical test. We hope to be ready by next week, and you will be able to follow us through the summer! You can subscribe to this blog for updates!

At The End of The Day It’s About Selling Culture

In New York, Seventh Avenue is preparing for Fashion week even as my local designers’ community is preparing is starting their prom, graduation and Spring Summer 2009; In my native Trinidad they’re Blue boxed1.pngpreparing for Carnival, while in Brooklyn , local merchants are trying to eke out what ever mileage they can from Black History Month and Valentine’s Day. In between I am trying to find time to follow the threads and contribute to the planning of BarCampNYC4 a tech “unconference”. Not to mention working with my mentor on jazz Documentation projects.

Even with 20 hrs a day I can manage to stay on top of it all. At first glance these various groups seemingly have little in common. However underlying it all they are they are simply trying to support themselves and their family doing what they love, what they are passionate about.

The challenge is to get the advanced tech community to see the value of time-worn traditions and appreciate “expertise’ gained not by sending 10,000 “tweets” but working over 10,000 hrs at particular task. On the other hand traditionalist, scoff at new techniques because they are “untested” and created by “young inexprienced” minds. Simalarly Young designers have old ideas but lack the technique of the veterans. Sure their is validity in fears of “stolen legacies” and economic abuse, but open and free interaction can offer so much including the knowledge of how to protect one’s intellectual property and cultural integrity.Blue boxed2.png

Efficient blending of technology, tradition and expertise can not only add extra opportunities but also cut cost as a result of effeciency. What “we” have found is that whether it is fashion or costume design, technology or storytelling, jazz or code the rules and process for creating and income and livelihood are the same. It is because I am fortunate enough to live in such a diverse community that I can access all this great inforation, tools and experise to create and test a program that not only works, but positively affect s life.
