Details
Can the rate of adoption be affected by design? How does our perception of values affect the survival of tech products?

Designing product, sales and marketing to maximize results with less resources can help organizations cut costs and develop an extremely loyal customer base! Separate the facts from the hype and build what works!

Explore what is needed to serve and bridge a gaping (and potentially lucrative) digital divide.

DeMarketPlace is a virtual network & incubator, centered in Brooklyn, designed within the constraints of doing more with less! The goal was to create a methodology and model which, while identifying and testing tools that could be used, could easily be adapted in any country with whatever existing resources were available! Thus giving local businesses access to a Global Market, in the shortest time possible!

At The End of The Day It’s About Selling Culture

In New York, Seventh Avenue is preparing for Fashion week even as my local designers’ community is preparing is starting their prom, graduation and Spring Summer 2009; In my native Trinidad they’re Blue boxed1.pngpreparing for Carnival, while in Brooklyn , local merchants are trying to eke out what ever mileage they can from Black History Month and Valentine’s Day. In between I am trying to find time to follow the threads and contribute to the planning of BarCampNYC4 a tech “unconference”. Not to mention working with my mentor on jazz Documentation projects.

Even with 20 hrs a day I can manage to stay on top of it all. At first glance these various groups seemingly have little in common. However underlying it all they are they are simply trying to support themselves and their family doing what they love, what they are passionate about.

The challenge is to get the advanced tech community to see the value of time-worn traditions and appreciate “expertise’ gained not by sending 10,000 “tweets” but working over 10,000 hrs at particular task. On the other hand traditionalist, scoff at new techniques because they are “untested” and created by “young inexprienced” minds. Simalarly Young designers have old ideas but lack the technique of the veterans. Sure their is validity in fears of “stolen legacies” and economic abuse, but open and free interaction can offer so much including the knowledge of how to protect one’s intellectual property and cultural integrity.Blue boxed2.png

Efficient blending of technology, tradition and expertise can not only add extra opportunities but also cut cost as a result of effeciency. What “we” have found is that whether it is fashion or costume design, technology or storytelling, jazz or code the rules and process for creating and income and livelihood are the same. It is because I am fortunate enough to live in such a diverse community that I can access all this great inforation, tools and experise to create and test a program that not only works, but positively affect s life.

We will center the project on this site. However we have set up various installations so as to test the best options.Today we begin educting participants on a broader sense. How 2D codes work a visualization

how_Qr_barcodes _work

At whichever points you encounter 2D codes. It is necessary to read or scan the image. Which is to say you take a picture of the image. The software then decodes the character embedded within the image.  when generating codes please decide if It is necessary sometime to embed code that directs the phone to take action that then ‘Hyperlinks’ the virtual, with the physical.  For example a 2d code could bookmark (save) a website url, or it can tell the phone to access the url … if it is accessible via a mobile browser. It can even take that action further directing a download of a video or audio file for example.

We have provided a list of code generators and scanners for those wanting to explore! To receive info on the project development and copies of codes simply subscribe via email to this (check extreme right column.)

We have received a lot of inquiries for many who have not seen the code in action as to exactly how it works. The challenge is that code are not just hanging around waiting to be scanned!

We are working to develop a holiday campaign, In the meantime We hope this helps.

Connecting at Web 2.0 expo NY and Web2openNy

I have questioned the effectiveness of business cards and personally believe that the ”green” movement needs to take a look at the business collateral distributed at conferences. I usally end up with a number of professional rather generic looking cards and culd seldom recall anything about the company or individual behind the card.

Promoting 2d codes use and usability
Download bar 2dsense code reader. Check out our post on use and usability!

I still needed a simple way to pass my contact info along, this time I decided to repurpose a flyer I had recently designed to promote qrcodes, as a card to distriute @ Web 2open.. I wanted an inexpensive, efficient way to connect with leave a memrable impression.

Connecting is one of the bonuses of confeences. For exhibitors capturing  that consumer is all important. Yet very few companies used the bar strip  at the back of the registration pass. In a couple of cases the reader did not work aither human error or malfunction, I was not sure.

I am really have taken to the potential of 2d barcodes 2d barcode reader allow mobile phones to “read’ several forms of 2d images.Within a year or two we will begin to see an increased use of these black and white graphics. There are many free options for generating the codes and a number of options for readers! Moreso they provide an affordable option to the business card.  Snap and you’ve secured your contact!  On the other all you have to do is generate the code and attach it to your badge, laptop and even, yes he business card!

2d bar codes uses, usability and adaptation

usabilty of barcode article2D barcodes could be as small as an inch square. Printed on stickers or business cards, or large and printed on canopies, billboards and awnings where their image can be ‘read’ by mobile devices of passers by! Their scope has only just began to be tapped. I’ve gotten the customary model x is the best reader comment. There is so much more to implementation of 2d codes than which is the best reader.

Create Landing Pages- Simply to generate the code for this article and include it in marketing material I had to generate create the landing page. I created and published a post to get the correct url from which the code would be generated. Went to the 2d sense site and generated the code, then unpublished and left it in a draft state till closer to the printing of the marketing material.

In some cases the landing age has to complete a call to action- make a purchase, sell the product what ever the goal landing pages need to be readable and executable by mobile devices- Which inevitably led to the question of formatting the post. Since I am assuming that the majority would read this on wider screens and understanding that the reader is looking for answers I opted for an essay type lay out As time goes by a chunk or point format may prove better models!

Encode I chose to use 2dsense to encode. Their code is generated for web use, which means I then have to adapt the image for printing. Kaywa generates larger images but there is no organization system. Just over 3 weeks of use and I already have a number of codes. I can just see organizing and cataloging those codes could develop into a problem. On the other hand unless you are into picture puzzles revisiting your code library can be a task of futility and saving the information that was decoded defies the purpose of 2d code technology!

Expose {Share or Find}

We first printed 2d code in February simply to expose the demographic to it and introduce the concept. We used street distribution of 5000 fliers and ensured that was the only marketing we did for the next few weeks we had 3640 unique hits, 89000 hits in the next 4weeks, and many questions about the code, it’s use and access. The point is the codes still need to dispersed or exposed, at that time there was no way I knew of tracking the scans, that is tlil the 2d sense platform. They have effectively created a mobile delivery system where codes can be sent to subscriber of their software.

Marketing

The fact that I had a 24 hr marketing and sales assistant by simply placing a code on a banner or sticker or business card is great. But how would I know if its working, and where. While we respect privacy issues, every purchase at a boutique or pop up sales counter give the retailer an opportunity to gather some basic stats, that can be used in business planning. Then there are various readers, with the 2d sense platform the stats and tracking including geographic location of the scan are within the codes generated

Follow through That code become a bookmark how does the user organize it and return to it, the code itself needs to be tagged

Why various formats

Open source is great, It also means it is available to everyone! I put myself within the demographic I study. ” Regular” folks, I ride the buses, eat at the restaurants, and browse the aisle of stores and groceries. 80% of the Brooklyn population has a mobile phone. Almost every person sitting in a pew or bus has a phone on his or her person, some two. Add Portable devices and Games and that figure jumps to almost 95%, if you add Ipods and then you have direct access to almost 99.5% of the population. Remember Brooklyn is reportedly the third highest populated city in the US, on Labor Day alone over 3 million people take part in the Brooklyn carnival celebrations! Unfortunately the 2d sense reader is available solely for the Iphone at this point. For marketing and Product info the open format is great

As an entrepreneur there are times when access to a proprietary format especially with a company that can add checks and balances or layers of security is important.. If for example I wanted to generate coupons or tickets, or using it as an inventory control system, I may to generate these from a proprietary format. In that case may also want my reader’s software to be proprietary!

Visual appeal.- in the example above their are various code each pointing to a differnet page, which is the one I want the last is a simulation of the 2dsense newest format; logo tag. recently introduced at a discussion on 2d code technology with local entrepreneurs. Logo code use the logos which companies have invested heavily in framing them within tags that essentially create the same effect as 2d barcodes! Short of this, the artist in me has settled for Blotcodes

sample usage

sample usage

Integration and adoption strategy.

Which comes first the chicken or the eggs! Do we push the readers and hope they have something to read or do companies invest in 2dcodes and hope the readers satisfy their need!

Ralph Lauren recent us open 2d code campaign may have generated buzz but many see it as an ill planned campaign. First of all to introduce the campaign without a link to reader downloads defied the purpose of the campaign. Then agin What exactly was the purpose of the campaign to generate sales – from the window of your flag ship store. The customer can simply go inside and make a direct purchase – on the streets of New York. Now take these ‘window displays to the US Open in the form of an installation, ad a plug in to directly the readers to phones or add a download and have the landing url given inviting reader to bookmark via the code they we start the M-commerce process. Given the M- commerce branding of the campaign I wonder whether an attempt to hide the fact that the technology is open..

<–>

2d code beyond window Shopping

QR code simulation

Unfortunately the only source of information many of us get is the television, and when it is a news reprt  we tend to accept it as fact. I wonder whether or not reporters asks questions. When they incorrectly or improperly report they leave a lasting impressions on many.
Window Shopping, Literally: Ralph Lauren Evolves

Swipe And Go: Retail Giant Becomes First In U.S. To Have Touch-Screen Shopping Available Outside Of Stores

“…You hold your phone over the code, it automatically takes a photograph of this code and it shoots all the information about the brand and the product into your phone,” Lauren said.”

The reporter should have checked with the technology department , you cannot simply click a picture you need to download special software. Down load Reader here to “read” the codes which will allow you to complete the process.

Secondly this is not M-commerce it is 2D barcode technology and can be used for info sharing, commerce , and semantic web even gaming. the uses vary! Coupons, digital tickets,

Since he original post they have made the necessry changes!

Now does the concept of windo shopping make sense. If the aim is to extend the access beyond store hours yes. It depends on how it is executed, In this case the company would have been better served by setting up window installations at the us open and using the opportunity to introduce the concept and capture- the mobile consumer.

Making Sense of 2D Codes

Brooklyn Fashion on IPhones

Brooklyn Fashion on IPhones

The Brooklyn Fashion Week Project which i am leading takes on the challenge of new media and its reshaping the very nature of fashion and presentation and trade. Thanks to 2dsense, and other tech companies such as Unyte Brooklyn, designers will be able to leverage new and emerging media for a fun-filled exciting  experienced, that is part of a grassroots marketing campaign led by designers themselves! Over the next few day and week we’ll take each one on. These informal partnerships give these companies hand on experience in adaptation and use of the products they have invested  in , while these independent businesses ( The toughest critics get an opportunity too shape the products that will be available to them.

I first was introduced to 2d codes via Winksite, and Through the First Mobile Barcamp I attended, which is where I also met Jose marinez!

Last year I sat In The 2D track dedicated to 2d barcode technology and their integration and use with several leaders in the field.

You Can Find the technical info here!

For the lay person the question  is how does this apply to me, what can I do with it!

First of all We chose 2D Sense because

1) they read multiple formats. While currently on the I phone  They Have promised other reader will be ready shortly

2) I fell in love with the Blotcode I had been looking for a proprietory format for artist marks and the Blotcodes, won My heart

3)Generating the Codes are great, But for the most part the discovery and exposure process was left open. 2D Sense  has created a mobile deliverable system. So that You can optin to delivering  codes to their subscribers, and subscribers will be able to scan their database for codes!
